Jansen Mine Update: Setting New Standards in Potash Industry in Saskatchewan

Project Overview

The Jansen Mine, located approximately 140 kilometres east of Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Canada, is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world. The mine is expected to begin production in late 2026 and produce approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). BHP, the client behind this project, has invested over CAD$14 billion in the project, with a goal to maximize sustainability.

Lafarge’s Role in the Jansen Project

Lafarge, a leading supplier of building materials, has been hired as a general subcontractor for the supply, construction/installation, commissioning, and start-up of a concrete batch plant at the BHP Jansen mine in Saskatchewan. Lafarge is providing concrete for piling, foundation, slabs, and other segments of the project.

Due to the unique scale and size of the project, Lafarge is utilizing a full laboratory office/trailer, allowing its technicians to perform concrete sampling, air-entrained tests, slump and flow tests, casting and curing of cylinders, and other miscellaneous tests. The environmental aspects of the project are managed through the Lafarge Environmental Management System, which includes regular site inspections and EMS audits to ensure that environmental requirements are being met.

Stage 1 of the project remains ahead of its initial schedule, with over 44% completion, and is expected to be in production by the end of 2026.
