Lafarge Pit 3 Extension: Community Information Hub

Lafarge Canada has been a part of the Caledon community for many years, operating Pit 3 with care and responsibility. As we plan the next phase of this long-standing operation, we aim to maintain open communication with our neighbours.

This page serves as a resource for our neighbours to view our plans, gain an understanding of the project, and share their feedback. The extension reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible operations.

Project Details

Located at 17903 Shaw’s Creek Road, just 1.5 km south of Charleston Sideroad, this project involves an extension of our existing Pit 3 operations.

Scope & Purpose

The project spans 25.6 hectares, with 20.8 hectares designated for extraction across four planned phases. Our goal is to extract aggregate resources responsibly, adhering to the highest environmental and regulatory standards.

Balancing Progress With Preservation

Extraction and Processing:

We prioritize responsible aggregate extraction. Processing operations are limited to Phase 1, located farthest from residents, and adhere to strict environmental protocols for minimal disruption and maximum efficiency.

Rehabilitation:

After extraction, we ensure complete site restoration. The proposed rehabilitation plan for the Pit 3 Extension restores the site to an agricultural condition and also creates two small amphibian breeding pools and 10 hectares of new woodlands. This plan will result in a considerable ecological enhancement over the current conditions of the site

Regulatory Compliance:

We uphold unwavering regulatory compliance. Comprehensive studies in hydrogeology, environment, noise, and transportation inform our decisions, ensuring alignment with provincial, regional, and town policies.

Community Engagement

We are committed to engaging with our neighbours throughout the review process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about this extension project? We've got answers.

Check out the FAQs for insights on the impact of this project on the community.

Q: How will the project impact the community?

A: The operations at the Pit 3 Extension have been engineered and designed to take in all the sensitive receptors in the surrounding community, and mitigation measures are integrated into this design to minimize impacts on the community.

Q: What measures are in place to ensure environmental responsibility?

A: Operations at the Pit 3 Extension will follow modern best practices as well as current regulations and legislation.  We also look at the types of equipment used onsite to minimize our reliance on fossil fuels and have a program in place to reduce idle time on equipment to reduce our emissions.

Q: Will there be any changes to the existing infrastructure or haul routes?

A: No.  We will use the existing infrastructure at the site to weigh and scale our trucks, and the trucks will follow the existing established haul routes.

Q: How long will the project take to complete?

A: The timeframe of this operation relies on the demand for aggregate in this market.

Q: What happens if there are concerns or complaints during the project?

A: Should anyone have a concern or comment regarding this project or the operations, we encourage you to contact Lafarge to get feedback.
